FAQ's
Why should I attend?
- Yearbook University is by far the most valuable and meaningful training experience you can give your staff.
- You will receive professional training, solidify innovative ideas, and dedicate two days to design the plan for your 2011 yearbook. Head into your summer knowing that your next year’s book has a solid plan, and conserve your precious summer days for yourself.
- You and your staff will truly "‘gel” as a team during the leadership training on the ropes course. The bonding and the fun you will have at this event will give you an amazing start to your year with a staff that is capable of achieving the goals you set.
- Reduce your back to school stress, having completed the new layouts on your own laptop, either online or with InDesign. You’ll get so much done and feel so ahead of schedule. When fall rolls around, getting back to school will be a snap!
- Use this event to reward your returning staff for 2012, and recruit those you wish to invite into leadership.

Will there be a computer lab?
No, but we recommend that you bring at least one laptop computer per yearbook staff so you can use it as you develop your plans. If you can bring a laptop for every couple of students, that would be ideal. Be sure the laptop has WiFi capability and the latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer installed so you can use your 2012 YearbookAvenue site while at camp. Please have logins prepared for your staff prior to camp. Here is a link to the Adobe download site for the latest version of Flash Player. If you can’t bring a laptop, it’s okay. You will have materials to form all of your plans on paper and you can transfer them to Yearbook Avenue later.
On Wednesday, the Photoshop classes will be taught so you can follow along with the instructor by watching and taking notes or try your hand at the special effects on your laptop. If you plan on using your laptop, be sure to have Photoshop installed prior to camp.
The focus of the Yearbook University iis on getting your detailed concrete plans done for your upcoming book. The focus will be on the creative ideas, the inspiration, the theme package, the content and coverage, the ladder planning, the graphic “look” of your book, the goal setting, the business and marketing plans, the leadership and teamwork training and all of the decisions made to make your 2011 book the best ever. You will be developing your graphic look and special effects for your book, but there will not be enough time at camp to complete full section design templates. You should take the knowledge and ideas learned at camp back home and fully develop your section templates over the summer.

Can I pick my roommates?
Yes! Put your roommate requests on your registration form and we will do our best to get you in the same room. The earlier that you register, the better likelihood you have of getting the roommate situation you desire.Of course, roommates must all be the same sex. Most rooms at the main lodge will have one or two sets of bunkbeds and a queen size bed, so they house 3-5 students per room.

Can I have my own room?
No. We do not have enough housing to accommodate single rooms.Lodging for students will be 3-5 per room.
Advisers will be assigned 2-3 per room, depending on our registration numbers. If you are an Adviser and have a special circumstance or medical condition that requires you to have your own room, let your representative know and we will make every effort to accommodate you. However availability is limited and the workshop directors cannot confirm a single room until registration is completely closed on June 15th.

Who will Supervise the students at night?
The adviser for each school is responsible for the supervision of those students during the day and at night. We strongly recommend that an Adviser for each school attend along with the students. This is not only for the supervision, but our years of workshop experience has shown that when Advisers attend the workshop with their students, the yearbook staff is stronger as a team, the decisions get made during the workshop, and the planning process goes a lot further. The Adviser will connect with the staff in a fun and inspirational environment away from school, which really helps set the tone for your entire year.If the Adviser cannot attend Yearbook University, then we strongly suggest that you send a parent or another teacher with your students to act as a chaperone. This adult will need to register and pay the registration fee.
While a majority of our workshop is high school students, middle school and college staffs are welcome to attend and will find the training equally valuable to them. However, for middle school students, at least one Adviser or Chaperone MUST register to attend for that school. Our experience is that middle school students need extra attention and assistance with the decision making and goal setting that will take place at this workshop and the overnight experience can be overwhelming to them if they don’t have a trusted adult with them.
Both Adults and Students will be housed in the same lodges, with adults being mostly in their own wing for peace and quiet. Canby Grove Conference Center is a safe and secure environment in the country with nothing else within walking distance, so we don’t anticipate any issues. This is a smaller, more intimate location than our previous years on a college campus in large dorms. Our staff will walk the halls at curfew and make sure all is well. We will be monitoring the student’s attendance at the workshop, but we will not be doing bed-checks at curfew, waking students up, as was required by our previous location.
Each Adviser is responsible for the 24-hour supervision of their own students. If you have a student you don’t think will follow the rules, then, please, don’t bring them to Yearbook University.

Can I pay for just one day, commute or leave early?
Tuition is a flat fee for any or all of the experience. The experience, including the evening activities builds on itself; we feel that all three days are imperative. We sure hope you can be a part of all of it!We have chosen to not offer a commuter option this year. Our costs are fixed, so there is no savings for not staying at the Lodge. Again, the workshop experience builds on itself and we feel that you will get your most out of the experience by full participation.
If you absolutely, positively, must go home each night, you may leave at dinnertime and return by 8:30 the next morning. There is no cost savings but we do ask that you let us know by June 15th that you plan on commuting so we don’t assign a room to you. We expect the lodge to fill up and that will allow us to add one more participant.
If you have special circumstances or students with concerns about staying overnight, talk to your rep. We can usually work things out.

How many students should I bring?
As many as you’d like to have involved in your 2012 planning. If possible, all of the decision makers should be there as a team. This is typically anywhere from 3-6 students, but it can be any number that works for your staff organizational structure. New staff members also have a lot to contribute, so you should invite your entire staff.Advisers should attend and bring the main editors, business/marketing managers, design editors, photo editors, writing editors, production editors, content editors, and any other lead positions you have on your staff.
